Mary Milianowicz Obituary

Mary Milianowicz passed peacefully at home on April 10, 2024 at age 93. She was born and raised in Yorkshire, England. Mary was predeceased by her beloved sisters Mildred and Winnifred and her husband and love of her life Stanislaw Milianowicz. Mary well remembered the air raids of World War II, post war rationing, local visits by the young Queen Elizabeth and prejudice against anything that was not wholly British.

At age seventeen Mary met and fell in love with a dashing young Polish engineering student on the big band dance floor in Huddersfield, England. They wed in 1952 and their adventures began. Their only daughter Alexandra Eva Curtis was born in Manchester, England.

Mary, Stan and Alexandra moved to Wales, Canada, Pennsylvania and California before settling in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. They shared a cul-de-sac with three other families, the Engels, Hilemans and Beirigers and for the next fifty plus years remained good friends. Other special friends over the years were the Crookstons, Westleys, Telfords and Cleavelands.

In 1969 Mary, Stan and Alexandra became naturalized and extremely proud American citizens. Mary and Stan were epic travelers and cruised to Alaska, the Caribbean, China, Europe, the Mediterranean and South America. They enjoyed so many cruises that they were frequently invited to the Captain’s table. And they always enjoyed their dancing. Mary’s many interests included cooking and baking. She was an expert seamstress and an avid gardener.

Mary and Stan moved to Leisure World in Maryland in 2017 to be near their daughter and her children. Mary deeply missed Stan after his death in February 2021 and moved to nearby Bedford Court Independent Living in June 2023. Mary enjoyed her many new friends at Leisure World, where she was known as “Mary Brit” and Bedford Court where she also enjoyed many activities and events.

In addition to daughter Alexandra, Mary’s surviving family includes son-in-law Lee Curtis, grandchildren Adrian Curtis(Sofia Juarez) and Alicia Rattan(John Scott Rattan) and great grandchildren Nicholas Curtis and Ava Rattan. Nieces in England include Susan Hobson, Janet Roper and Donna McLoughlin and in Australia Gail Hirst.
