William Kollins Obituary

William Joseph “Bill” Kollins, 88, of Olney, Maryland passed away peacefully after a short illness on January 22, 2024.  Bill was born on September 26, 1935 in Chicago Illinois to Victor and Ellen (Dunlap) Kollins.  Bill was the beloved husband of Mary Ann (King) Kollins; loving and supportive father of Katherine (Mike) Callaghan, the late David M. Kollins, Michael Kollins, Jeffrey Kollins, and Jennifer Kollins; proud grandfather of Claire Callaghan, Eloise Kollins, and Abigail Kollins; and brother of Richard Kollins, the late Sally Brazeau, and Joyce Sullivan.

Bill attended Divine Word Seminary high school in East Troy, Wisconsin, followed by two years of study at Divine Word Missionary in Techny, Illinois.  Bill next served as a Russian language translator in the 6921st Radio Squadron, Misawa Air Force Base, in Misawa, Japan from 1959 through 1962.  He then attended Loyola University Chicago, earning a B.S. degree in political science in 1965, followed by a J.D. degree in 1968 from Loyola University Chicago Law School.

Bill met his wife, Mary Ann, through a law school friend who was married to a fellow teacher Mary Ann worked with at Schiller Park Elementary school in Schiller Park, Illinois. They married on December 14, 1968 at St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church in Park Ridge, Illinois, and soon thereafter moved to Silver Spring, Maryland, on the outskirts of Washington D.C. where Bill began work as an attorney for the Department of Justice.

Over the course of his long and dedicated law career, Bill rose to Chief of the Land Acquisition Section in the Environment and Natural Resources Division at the Department of Justice, before finally retiring in 1998.  Bill found great strength in his Catholic faith.  He was a longtime member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Olney, Maryland where he made many friends over the years, assisted as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, and served as treasurer for the Knights of Columbus.  Bill enjoyed spending time with family, drinking good coffee and doing crossword puzzles, watching movies and various television mystery series, and was passionate about listening to a wide variety of music through his state-of-the-art audio system.  He was enthusiastic about fishing for most of his life, and had even mastered performing magic, which was enthralling for his children when they were young.  He approached all things with a brilliant mind, quick wit, amazing sense of humor, and gentle heart, for which he was treasured.
