William Jackson Obituary

William "Bill" Jackson was born on December 6, 1937 to Lewis Jackson and Fran Schulte Jackson. He grew up in Washington D.C. and Florida, and graduated from Archbishop Carrol High School and then the University of Maryland with a degree in accounting. He married the love of his life, Erika Hoffmann, in 1964. The rumor (started by Bill), is that he got Erika's attention for the first time by shooting her with a water squirt gun.

Bill, a certified public accountant, had a 30-year career with the defense contract audit agency in the federal government. He also served in the naval reserves, with some funny stories that usually involved near misses at sea. Outside of spending time with his beloved wife and visiting brew pubs with his family, Bill's passion was genealogy. Ask him a question, any question, and you’d find out some fun fact, like his descendancy from Charlemagne.

His sense of humor was unique. He would incorporate a joke into a regular conversation and you'd only know it was a joke once he delivered the punchline, or through his "tell" right before the punchline - the faintest of a smile. His philosophy with both jokes and stories, was to never tell it the same way - that way it's new every time. And embellishment in the retelling is, of course, encouraged. His last joke, the day he died, had the punchline: "and the bartender said, Superman, you make a mean drunk."

He was also a voracious reader and a writer of several collections of family stories and detective books starring the retired police detective, Bill Johnson. We cant prove it for sure, but we think the character may have been loosely based on himself.

He is survived by Erika, his wife of 61 years, his children, Therese Intrater (Neil), Paul Jackson (Marcia) Chris Jackson (Diane) and Michelle Jackson, seven grandchildren, Samantha, Jennifer, Lucas, Nicholas, Samuel, Abigail and Zachary William (named after him), sisters Trudy Summers (Mace) and Louise Howard (Joe), and ten nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Pat Lovenstein, her husband Red, nephews Edward and Patrick, and niece Lauren Patricia.

Bill was a beautiful writer, and his wife Erika was a gifted painter. In their 61-year marriage story, he wrote the words and she painted the pictures.
