Virginia Bernabe Tortona, 88, of Brookeville, Maryland, was called home to God on Friday, May 22, 2026. She passed away peacefully with family around her.
Virginia was born in the Philippines to Virginia Que Santos and Rufino Bernabe. Raised and educated in the Philippines, she graduated from the University of Santo Tomas with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture. In August 1965, she married Julian Tortona, and together they moved to the United States and built a family and life together for 47 years.
After Julian was called to Heaven, Virginia continued to live a full life of prayer and service to her parish community at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Olney where she served as a sacristan, a eucharistic minister, and an Arimathean. She was a steadfast student of her faith and shared her love of learning and enjoyed walking her faith journey with her close friends in her Bible Study classes.
Virginia is survived by her children, Anthony, J. Rufino (Kay) Tortona, and Virginia A. (Daniel) Delgado; and her grandchildren, Laura A. (Brendan) Delgado-Mattina, and Miguel T. Delgado. Virginia has lived an incredibly full and blessed life. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
The Viewing will take place Saturday, June 6, 2026 from 10 -11 am, followed immediately by the Funeral Mass at 11 am at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 2900 Olney-Sandy Spring Road 20832.
