Taky Mourtzanakis, M.D. Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Taky E.D. Mourtzanakis, M.D., a dedicated and compassionate healer who left an indelible mark on the lives of countless individuals. He departed this world on February 10, 2024, at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering commitment to the well-being of others and his family and friends.

Born on April 20, 1935, in Cairo. Egypt, he grew up in both Egypt and Greece before graduating from the University of Cairo Medical School and dedicating his life to the pursuit of medical excellence. After graduating from medical school, he came to the United States and the Washington, D.C. area in 1964 to begin residency in surgery. After his residency, he worked as a general and trauma surgeon and headed up the ER at Doctor’s Hospital in Lanham, MD. Known to his patients as Dr. Taky, he began his general surgery and family practice in Laurel, MD in the early 1970’s. He kept his practice open until he retired at the age of 70 in 2005.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Taky was also an avid traveler, photographer, soccer player, Washington Capitals fan, and dog lover. He spent countless hours enjoying his hobbies and passions. Dr. Taky will be remembered for his kindness and genuine concern with which he approached each medical case and generous nature towards his family and friends.

Dr. Taky is survived by Emily, his wife of 56 years whom he met during his residency and married in March of 1967. Taky and Emily shared an abundance of joy, happiness, and companionship during their time together. In addition to his wife, he will be fondly remembered by his three children Melissa Weber (and husband Eric), Joanna Barsotti, and son Michael Mourtzanakis (and wife Aimee). In addition to his children, he was loved greatly by his five grown grandchildren Kelly Mourtzanakis, Drew Weber, Scott Mourtzanakis, Zachery Weber, and Ava Barsotti. His legacy of passion, kindness, and inspiration will forever be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
