Susan Freeman Redding

On Friday, June 19, 2026, Susan Freeman Redding died peacefully in the presence of her family and friends after a long battle with cancer. Born in Guthrie, Oklahoma in 1953, she graduated from Guthrie High School in 1971. Having decided on nursing for a career, she worked during high school in the summers and holidays at Guthrie Hospital and Edmond Memorial Hospital and while she completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and graduated from Central State University (now known as University of Central Oklahoma) in 1975. After graduating from college, she returned to Guthrie and worked at the local hospitals for two more years before moving to Oklahoma City in 1978 to work in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at St. Anthony Hospital where she continued to work until August 1986. She moved to the Washington, DC area after her marriage in 1986 to J. Christopher Redding whom she had met when he worked for a federal appellate judge in Oklahoma City. In late 1986, she began working part time at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Maryland in the intensive care unit and in 1987 moved to the cardio ICU at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park, Maryland where she worked part time for over 32 years before retiring in October 2019 after 44 years of nursing.

Susan and her husband Chris are longtime members of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and most recently at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, and since 1996 at Manor Country Club where Susan enjoyed golfing, dining and other activities at MCC with her husband and many friends. She served as president, vice president and in other capacities for the Manor Women's Golf Association for multiple years. Susan especially enjoyed her time with her beloved dogs, Brutus and Jordan, walking them for miles a day for their exercise and hers. Susan also enjoyed traveling to different places in the United States, Caribbean, Europe, and Mexico, and loved spending time with her extended family and many friends. It was rare for her to miss a relative's or friend's birthday or significant event without a present, card or phone call. She often helped family and friends with a variety of medical issues, taking family members and friends to doctors' appointments, and, in some instances, staying and nursing them in the weeks before they passed on.

Susan is survived by her husband, Chris, her brother W. Dudley Freeman (wife, Colleen) of Guthrie, Oklahoma, her brother James W. Freeman of Guthrie, Oklahoma, Susan Redding Powers (husband, James) of Sanford, Florida, J. Michael Redding (wife, Corrine Dale) of Nashville, Tennessee, and nephews Patrick Freeman (wife, Melissa and children Bailey and Carson), Michael Freeman (wife, Natalie and children Kyla and Jett) all of Guthrie, Oklahoma, Philip Redding of Enterprise, Oregon, and nieces Dr. Katherine Redding (husband, Dr. Javid Moslehi and child Noor) of San Francisco, California, Kaitlin Powers (husband, Christopher Bilbao and child Brandon Bilbao) of Winter Springs, Florida, and Kara Powers of Jefferson, North Carolina.

Funeral services will begin at 10:00 am followed by mass at 11:00 am on Thursday, July 23 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Silver Spring, Maryland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center, or The Maryland Nurse Honor Guard.
