Born on March 28, 1933 in Washington, DC. Straton was the son of Charles Laios and Genevieve Fletcher. He went to St. Francis Xavier grade school. He graduated from Gonzaga College High School in 1951. He got his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from Catholic University in 1955.
Strat married his beloved wife Dolores Conrad in 1956. They were married 51 years until her death in 2007. He served in the United States Air Force from 1956-1959, and was stationed at Yokota Air Force Base in Japan. He then returned to Takoma Park, MD and started his 30+ year career at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. He moved to College Park, MD in 1961 where he and Dolores started and raised their family. They had three children, Michael, Stephanie, and Lisa. In 1971 he got his graduate degree at the University of Maryland in College Park in Electrical Engineering. In 1986 they relocated to Silver Spring, MD. After retirement he worked as a contractor for Allied Signal.
He was an avid Washington Redskin fan and was a season ticket holder through the 2013 season. He purchased his first season ticket at Griffith Stadium at the age of 8. He enjoyed playing and watching all sports, but was an avid golfer and tennis player. He was proud of his Greek heritage and enjoyed Greek festivals. He was a member of the board at the College Park Woods Swim Club. He was voted “Alumni Man of the Year” at Gonzaga College High School in 2015, an award he received for his devoted time and involvement to the Alumni Reunions. He committed this same involvement at Catholic University as well. He was an active volunteer at the Church of the Resurrection where he attended daily mass.
Straton was the beloved husband of the late Dolores Laios; father of Michael Laios, Lisa Laios and the late Stephanie Laios; Grandfather of Nicolas and Alexandra Laios; brother of Edward Laios, and the late Robert Laios and James Laios. Also survived by 6 nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at the Church of the Resurrection, 3315 Greencastle Road Burtonsville, MD 20866 with Visitation on Monday, November 11 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm and on Tuesday, November 12 at 11:00 am with a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 noon. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Silver Spring, MD.
