Sophia Diane Ward

Sophia Diane Ward (nee Maroules), age 61, passed into the arms of Our Heavenly Father on January 14, 2022.

A native of Chevy Chase, MD. Sophia graduated from Bethesda Chevy Chase High School in 1978. Upon graduation she went to work at Time Saver in Kensington, MD where she spent three years. In 1981 she began an amazing 39 year career as a federal employee. She began as a secretary at Bethesda Naval Hospital before transferring to the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, also located in Bethesda, MD. In 1986 she moved on to a remarkable career with the U.S. Federal Bankruptcy Court, District of Maryland, where she stayed for 34 years. She began as an Intake Clerk and rose to the position of Courtroom Deputy where she remained until her retirement in February of 2020.

Sophia was a passionate sports fan and an avid bowler. She was an exceptionally skilled baker and loved to host large gatherings at her home in Damascus, MD. She was quite an animal lover and supported many different rescue organizations. She was an enthusiastic fan of all types of music and loved to attend live concerts of her favorite stars. Sophia enjoyed her retirement reading books and watching movies while quarantining against the COVID-19 virus. Sophia had a way of connecting with people. She touched people’s hearts in a very special way. You didn’t forget Sophia once you met her, and she never forgot a name or face. She was compassionate, patient, and most of all a loving and giving person.

Sophia is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Bob, her mother Harriet Maroules, her brother Efrem (Beth) Maroules, her sister Kristina (Brent) Henry, her sisters-in-law Margaret (Earl) Gamache and Patty Ethridge, and her brother-in-law Dan (Beth) Ward. She was predeceased by her loving father John Maroules. She is also survived by a host of loving nieces and nephews, and an abundance of adoring extended family and friends.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 21, 2022 at Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church 721 Norwood Rd, Silver Spring, MD 20905 with Funeral service  at 11:00 AM. Interment to follow at All Souls Cemetery, Germantown, MD.
