Sofia Gemolas Obituary

** Please note change to service date/times below. **

With a strong faith in God, a progressive mentality, and personal grit, Sofia Gemolas was a strong Greek woman who loved and cared deeply for her family, friends, culture and church.  Last week, Sofia passed away peacefully after a short illness and hospitalization.

Born Sofia Alexiadou, she grew up in Feres, Evros, Greece.  After losing her father at the age of nine, Sofia remained close with her mother and two sisters, Tula and Theodora.

She studied drafting at the local technical university in Alexandroupoli. In her 20s, she moved to Kozani, Greece to work on a new hydroelectric power plant, the Polyfyto Dam, which is still operational today.

There, she met Nicholas Gemolas, who was visiting from the United States to learn more about his extended family.  On April 1, 1973, they married at St. Nicholas Church in Kozani, moved to a town outside of Athens, and a year later welcomed their son, Demetry.

Sofia immigrated to the United States in 1974 with her new husband and six-month old son, Demetry, following years of political unrest in Greece.  They chose Prairie Village, KS to raise their family to be near  Nicholas’ brother. There, she learned English, continued to work in drafting, raised her son, and made friends she considered family. Sofia also became an active member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, where she taught Greek School to the church’s children.

In 2011, Sofia and Nicholas moved to Frederick, MD to be close to Demetry and his wife, Anna, with the hopes of becoming grandparents. In 2012, she welcomed her first granddaughter, named for her.

Known as Yia Yia to her three grandchildren, Sofia (11), Nicholas (7) and Emilia (5), Sofia loved time with her little “kouklas.” Her family will honor and remember her daily– through loving each other and God, caring deeply for family and friends, continuing the traditions, making the recipes, and dancing the steps she taught them.

A Funeral Service will be held at Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church at 920 West 7th St in Frederick, MD on Monday, January 22 at 12:30 p.m,  preceded by a Visitation at 11:30 a.m.. A private burial will follow.
