Sidra Van Norden, a deeply loved mother, daughter, wife, and friend, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on July 26, 2024. A private burial ceremony was held on February 4, 2026, where she was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery alongside her parents and her husband’s parents.
Her 52-year love story with her husband, Michael, began when she moved into the apartment next to his while he was stationed in the military. Though Sidra initially refused to date him because he was the same age as her younger brother, she finally gave in when he knocked on her door looking for someone to help him celebrate his 21st birthday. That first date sparked a lifetime of devotion, and their commitment was sealed with a long-distance telephone proposal just before Michael was deployed to Vietnam.
It was clear early on that whoever married Sidra would need to share her profound love for children. Together, she and Michael raised three wonderful children. Her passion for youth leadership inspired her to return to school, where she earned a Master of Library Science from McDaniel College. As an elementary school librarian, she found great joy not only in sharing her love of books and learning with the children in her community but also in mentoring them in the school newsroom and teaching them about new technology.
Over the years, their living room became a gathering place for Girl Scouts and their parents as the girls moved through the different stages of scouting. Her natural leadership was legendary. Many years later, at their oldest daughter’s wedding, several former Scouts were cutting it up until their old troop leader called them to order with just a few words—bringing a smile to Michael’s face.
Sidra had deep roots in southwest Iowa. Her father, VADM C.R. Bryan, was raised in Red Oak, and her mother, Ardis Winifred Bryan, grew up in nearby Villisca. Throughout her life, Sidra cherished the childhood summers she spent visiting her grandmother, Alyce Bryan, and creating lifelong memories with her family under the Iowa sun.
Fifty-two years of marriage may sound like a lifetime to some, but it was not nearly long enough. Sidra is missed every single day but her legacy of love, leadership, and warmth lives on in the many lives she touched.
