Rosina Bartolomeo Scott

Rosina Bartolomeo Scott, age 95, peacefully passed away on August 22, 2026.  She is predeceased by her daughter Nancy Halphen, her parents Matteo and Vittoria Bartolomeo, and her sisters Marian, Marie, and Lena.  She is survived by her children Michael Scott (Meg), Anne Scott, and Sharon Feldmann (Kurt), her son-in-law Randy Halphen, her grandchildren David, Jason, Jenn, Scott, Christy, and Allison, her great-grandchildren Teresa, Daichi, Michelle, Sola, Zach, Jackson, Hana, Ava, Siena, Jacob, Aidan, Alex, Bennett, Samuel, Ayla, Benji, Alicia, Matteo, Isabella, and Nazanin, her sisters Jo and Frances, and many nieces and nephews.

Rose was born on December 22, 1930 in Washington, DC.  She was the daughter of Italian immigrants Matteo and Vittoria and had five sisters.  She grew up in a close-knit loving family with many paisans often visiting.  They were parishioners at Nativity Church, but they sometimes attended Mass and social events with other paisans at Holy Rosary church in DC (also known as “the Italian church”).  The sisters liked to play kick the can and other games in the alley behind their house and often got ice cream from the ice cream truck.  She attended Truesdell Elementary School, Paul Junior High School, and Coolidge Senior High School in Washington DC.  She was active in high school, playing on the volleyball team, working on the yearbook committee and in the cafeteria, was part of the business office staff, and was chairman of the senior class commencement committee.  She liked hillbilly and mountain music.  When Rose was a teen, she babysat for neighborhood children.  As teens and young adults, her family often went to Breezy Point or North Beach on the Chesapeake Bay on Sunday afternoons.  Since her family never had a car, the boyfriends of the sisters drove them all.  They often rode the streetcars downtown to go shopping.  Rose graduated in January 1949.  After high school, Rose’s first job was at Kresge’s Department Store at the candy counter.  She also worked at William Penn Supply Company and The Hecht Company.

Rose married and had four children – Michael, Nancy, Anne, and Sharon, and moved briefly to Smithton, Missouri and later to Columbus, Ohio, where she did babysitting.  In 1959, she moved back to DC and lived with her parents, raising her children.  There she worked at GEICO Insurance Company for 30 years, retiring in September 1990.  Rose was a member of a bowling league for a time – the “Fowlers” of the Nativity Women’s League.  She was a fan of the Washington Senators and also a lifelong fan of the Washington football team and liked to watch the Sunday games and keep track of their standings.  She enjoyed watching game shows, especially Price is Right, America Says, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy. She was quick at getting the puzzles and guessing the answers.  She enjoyed duck-pin bowling with her children, miniature golf at the beach, and playing family games with her children and grandchildren.  Rose liked doing crosswords and other word puzzles.  She enjoyed reading the newspaper each day, doing the daily and weekly crossword puzzles, and reading magazines and biographies.

Rose left her childhood home in 1986 to live with her daughter in Wheaton, MD.  She faithfully kept a journal each day for the last 45 years, and her family found them invaluable when they needed to remember some detail about an event or when something happened or who was there.  Rose was a bit of a family historian, keeping detailed records of all family members, including their extended families, birthdays, marriages, and other events.  She even found it fun to organize these facts into categories, such as things like which day of the week or which day of the month was the most frequent for family birthdays, or which letter of the alphabet or how many times the March and April people would have an Easter birthday, or what numerical place a child had in the order of grandchildren.  She had a list for everything so you could see at a glance!  Rose never learned to drive a car, but she was very independent and knew all the bus routes, getting around to wherever she needed to go.  As a passenger in a car, she was a very good navigator and very helpful to the driver in the days before GPS.  Though she never owned a pet, she was a good “pet grandma”, often helping taking care of the various dogs (and birds, rabbit, hermit crabs, gerbils) of her children when they were away.

Rose was a member of St. Catherine Labourè Leisure Club for many years.  She enjoyed going on many trips with them, visiting varied places and seeing shows.  She enjoyed lunch meetings and playing bingo, where she frequently served as caller!  In 2021, Rose moved to Leisure World with her daughter Anne.  There she joined St. Patrick’s Leisure Club and played bingo at Our Lady of Grace Church.

Rose’s faith was very important to her, faithfully saying her prayers and rosary.  Rose loved traveling to visit relatives and friends all over, going to New Jersey, Indiana, Missouri, and California.  Once she took a cross-country trip by herself, riding the trains and visiting various landmarks.  She loved having everyone around for all the holidays and birthdays, and she cooked dinner for all the family at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter.  It was her joy to make the frittata on Easter Sunday, taking over the Italian family tradition from her father and teaching her daughters.  She always remembered birthdays and liked sending (and receiving) cards.  She would always put a dollar bill into the kids’ cards.

Mostly she loved time spent with her family, joining them on trips to the beach, to the fair, to amusement parks, or just visiting them in their homes or having them visit her.  Rose was a kind, generous, and loving person, always thinking of others.  She was a wonderful mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt.

Rose’s family will be receiving family and friends on Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 10 – 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Church, 15663 Norbeck Blvd., Silver Spring, MD 20906. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held immediately after at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace.  There will be a reception immediately following at the Parish Center.  Interment will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20906, on Monday, August 31, at 9 a.m.
