Robert F. Smith (Bob) of Silver Spring, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 12, 2022. He was 87 years old.
Bob was born on Jan 22, 1935 to Howard and Mildred Smith, of Bethesda/Chevy Chase, MD. He was married for 64 years to his wife Carol, also of Bethesda/Chevy Chase.
Bob graduated from St. John's Military Academy in Washington DC. He graduated with a B.A. In history from the University of Maryland with ROTC officer training.
Bob enlisted in U.S. Army (Sargent), serving at Fort Chaffee, AK as an artillery instructor. Upon being honorably discharged, He returned to Maryland and worked as a teacher for D.C. public schools. Later, he worked as a faculty/staff instructor at Spring Grove State Hospital until his retirement in 1996.
Bob and his wife Carol spent most of their life living in Potomac/Rockville Md, before moving to a retirement community in Silver Spring. He was a baseball player and an avid sports fan. He played in many baseball/softball leagues over the years, including semi-pro and senior ball. He coached youth baseball as well when his children were young.
In his later years, Bob was President of the Leisure World duckpin bowling club. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren as well as his family. "Bubba" was the Grand Patriarch.
Bob is survived by his wife, his brother; his 2 sons and his daughter; his 2 granddaughters, his 2 grandsons and a great-granddaughter. Bob was predeceased in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 6, 2022 from 9 AM to 11 AM at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Leisure World, Silver Spring, MD. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow, beginning at 11 AM.
Interment will be PRIVATE at the Maryland Veteran Cemetery. The family will be leaving immediately following the mass.
