Rahim Mokhtari

Rahim Mokhtari was born in 1944 to Ahmad Reza Mokhtari and Khanoomagha Mohammed Javad in Isfahan, Iran. He was the fourth of eight siblings in a tightly knit family. He was born with congenital cataracts and glaucoma resulting in significantly limited vision throughout his life. Although he attended elementary school, his parents could not find a secondary school that would accommodate his disability for many years. He eventually moved to Tehran to complete high school at a school for the blind and visually impaired. He received a top score on Iran's national college entrance exam earning a full government scholarship to complete his Bachelors in Education with a Minor in Psychology at the University of Isfahan. After graduation, he became a deputy in Iran's national agency for the blind where he helped run Iran's first vocational rehabilitation program to help people with vision disabilities. It was in this position that he met Guiti, his beloved wife of 43 years, who was working as a translator for the agency at the time.

In 1983, Rahim and Guiti came to the United States so their daughter, Shadi, could receive a novel cataract treatment. They settled in Houston, TX where for several years they worked as rehabilitation counselors with the United Way's Lighthouse of Houston. To better support their family, they later bought and ran a gas station and convenience store. In 2009, they moved to Rockville, MD in order to be closer to their kids and help raise their first grandson.  

Rahim was known and admired for his extraordinary resilience, compassion, love of family, and ability to enjoy the best in life even in the hardest of circumstances. Whether it was financial difficulties, losing his house to Hurricane Ike, or his 17 year battle with cancer, he met every life challenge with an abundance of hope, strength, and perseverance.

He was also known for his sense of humor, quick wit, and his beautiful voice -- which gave life to many a family gathering. He loved to be surrounded by family, friends, laughter, and nature. Rahim had a unique ability to connect with people of all ages. He used his words to help lift others up and served as an adviser and confidant to countless family members, friends, and even strangers. He was a man of peace and whenever a conflict arose among family and friends, he used his calm demeanor to help resolve it. From an early age, he was an avid follower of news and politics. He always yearned to see humanitarianism, reason, scientific knowledge, democracy, and justice prevail -- around the world, and especially in his native Iran and adopted United States.

Rahim is survived by his wife Guiti; his daughter Shadi and her husband Peyman; his son Rohmteen and his partner Andy; his grandsons Shayan and Nima; his sisters Zari, Dokhi, and Ghodsi; and his brothers Hamid, Gholam, and Abdi.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 13, 4:00pm, at Rockville Cemetery, 1350 Baltimore Rd, Rockville, MD 20851. The service will be followed by a dinner and memorial reception honoring his life. The closest hotel to the funeral site is the Cambria Hotel Rockville.

رحیم مختاری در سال ۱۳۲۴ از پدری به نام احمد رضا مختاری و مادری به نام خانوم آغا محمد جواد در شهر اصفهان متولد شد. رحیم فرزند چهارم از هشت فرزند، از بدو تولد مبتلا به آب مروارید و گلوکم مادرزادی بود که موجب محدودیت شدید بینایی برایش بود.

پس از اتمام دوران ابتدایی به علت عدم امکانات توانبخشی برای چند سال اجبارا از ادامهٔ تحصیل ممانعت کرد. بعد از مهاجرت به تهران دوران دبیرستان را با موفقیت در اموزشگاهی مجهز با امکانات برای دانش آموزان نابینا  تمام کرد. سپس در کنکور سراسری شرکت کرد و با کسب امتیاز ممتاز وارد دانشگاه اصفهان شد و پس از چهار سال دورهٔ لیسانس در رشته‌های علوم تربیتی‌ و روانشناسی‌ را با موفقیت به پایان رسند.

بعد از اتمام تحصیلات با عنوان معاون در سازمان توان بخشی نقش کلیدی در افتتاح اولین برنامهٔ توان بخشی حرفه‌ای با هدف کمک به نابینایان در ایران ایفا کرد. در سازمان توانبخشی رحیم با همسر آینده آاش گیتی‌ که در عنوان مترجم سازمان مشغول به کار بود آشنا شد.

در سال ۱۹۸۳ میلادی رحیم و گیتی‌ برای معالجه دخترشان شادی که گریبانگیر همان اختلالات بینایی شده بود به آمریکا مهاجرت کردند. آنها در شهر هوستن مستقر شدند و برای چندین سال هر دو با عنوان مشاوران توان بخشی در سازمان لایت هوس یونایتد وی و بعد‌ها برای حمایت اقتصادی بیشتر برای خانواده یک ایستگاه پمپ بنزین همراه فروشگاه خریداری کردند. در سال ۲۰۰۹ میلادی برای نزدیکتر بودن به بچها و نوهٔ اولشان رحیم و گیتی‌ به شهر راکویل در ایالت مریلند کوچ کردند.

از صفات رحیم محبت و عشق به خانواده، انعطاف پذیری فوق العاده، و توانایی لذت بردن از بهترین‌های زندگی‌ در حین سخت ترین شرایط را می‌توان نام برد. مواجه با موانع سنگین زندگی‌ من جمله مشکلات اقتصادی، از دست دادن خانه در یک طوفان مهیب، و یا ۱۷ سال مبارزه با بیماری سرطان رحیم نه تنها نفس خودش را کاملا حفظ میکرد بلکه سعی‌ میکرد در همان حل اطرافیانش را نسبت به خود تسکین دهد.

وی همچنین شوخ تبع و خوش صدا بود که همیشه به دور همی‌‌های خانوادگی صفا بخش بود.

رحیم به راحتی‌ با افراد همه سنی ارتباط بر قرار میکرد. وی از کلماتش برای بهبود روحیه دیگران استفاده میکرد. او به عنوان مشاور محرمانه به تعداد زیادی از دوستان و اعضای خانواده آاش و حتا اشخاص غریبه خدمت میکرد. رحیم انسان صلح دوست و صلح جو‌ای بود و هر زمان درگیری بین نزدیکانش ایجاد میشد از رفتار آرمبخش خودش برای کمک به حل آن استفاده میکرد. او از جوانی اخبار و روندهی سیاسی روز را در سراسر جهان دنبال میکرد. رحیم همواره آرزومند استقرار دلیل و منطق، علم، عدالت اجتماعی‌ در تمام جهان بود.

بازماندگان رحیم همسرش گیتی‌، دختر و همسرش شادی و پیمان، پسر و شریک زندگی آاش رامتین و اندی، نوادگانش شایان و نیما، خواهر انش دخی، قدسی‌، و زری، برادرانش عبدی، غلام، و حمید میباشند.

در عوض گل خانواده درخواست می‌کند که کمک‌های مالی به ....، حمایت غیر انتفاعی از کودکان ایرانی‌ که با سرطان زندگی‌ میکنند انجام شود. مراسم خاک سپاری  در ساعت ۴ بعد از ظهر روز شنبه ۱۳ آوریل در قبرستان راکویل برگزار و سپس مراسم یاد بود زندگی‌ او همراه با پذیرایی‌ شا م دنبال خواهد شد.
