Michele Spach Young, age 73, passed away peacefully at home on April 3, 2026 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. A lifelong resident of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Michele will be remembered for her warmth, wit, and the deep love she shared with her family, friends, and community.
Michele dedicated much of her life to education, beginning her career as a special needs teacher before continuing her work as a resource teacher at her own childhood elementary school, St. Mary of the Assumption. She had a gift for connecting with others and made a lasting impact on the lives of countless students and colleagues through her kindness, patience, and compassion. In recognition of her lasting contributions and impact, Michele was honored as one of ten inaugural recipients of the St. Mary of the Assumption Legacy Award in September 2025.
She is survived by her three daughters: Rachel Kalwa and her husband, Adam Kalwa; Nettie King and her husband, Mike King; and Hannah Ruckstuhl. Michele was a proud and devoted Nana to eight grandchildren—Nathan, Chloe, Caleb, Jacob, Grace, Charlie, Scarlet, and Ivy—who brought her immense joy and were the light of her life.
She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Jacob Young; her parents, Ross and Dolores Spach; and her sister, Cynthia King.
Michele found joy in life’s simple and beautiful moments. She loved gardening, cooking, and baking for those she cared about, and she cherished time spent with her grandchildren. She had a passion for travel, especially her trips to Europe and her fondness for England. The Christmas season was particularly special to her, as she delighted in celebrating with family and creating lasting memories.
Known for her witty, kind, and friendly nature, Michele had a unique sense of style—fashionable with a touch of whimsy—that reflected her vibrant personality. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Her life was a testament to love, generosity, and quiet strength. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion and joy that will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.
The Viewing will take place on Wednesday, April 8th from 5:00-8:00 PM and the Funeral will be Thursday, April 9th at 11:00 AM. Both will take place at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Upper Marlboro, MD (details below).
