Martha Jane Werning

On August 29, 2023, Martha Jane (nee Calhoun) Werning died peacefully in her Rockville, Maryland home surrounded by her husband Jack, her children and grandchildren and great grandchildren, and friends, all of whom sang to her some of her favorite prayers and songs. Born Feb. 27, 1933, and known as Marty - and Queenie to her many grandchildren - she had suffered for several months with pulmonary fibrosis and amyloidosis.

Marty was a powerful presence in many people's lives. While her physical presence will be missed, we believe she is still with us through an even more powerful presence, the communion of saints united to Christ. Marty was pre-deceased by her eldest son John Thomas. She leaves behind her husband, Jack, of 69 years; her children Dorothy (and Bob Whitt); Melissa; Sue; Jean (and Max Karlovitz); David (and Yue Wang); Joseph (and Sophia Collis); and Nancy; her daughter-in-law Kathy Kessell (John's wife); and 22 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 10:30am on Friday, September 15, 2023 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 15663 Norbeck Blvd, Silver Spring, MD 20906; where the Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:30am.  Interment to follow at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery, 1122 Sunrise Beach Road, Crownsville, MD 21032.
