Marguerite “Marge” T. Szawlewicz, age 94, died peacefully on April 21, 2021. Marge D’Auria Szawlewicz was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on October 11, 1926. She was the third of four children of Louis and Angelina D’Auria. She grew up in Audubon, New Jersey, with her sister Marie and her brothers Joe and Louis. She attended Camden Catholic High School and obtained a bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1948, where she graduated summa cum laude and was class valedictorian. After college, she worked at the Philadelphia Navy Yard Materials Lab, where she met Stanley Szawlewicz. They were married on May 27, 1950, a marriage that lasted over 60 years and produced five daughters.
Marge and Stan moved to Rockville, MD in 1957. They attended St. Jude’s Catholic Church, where they made lifelong friends, and where Marge was an active member of the sodality. They then became founding members of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, where Marge became very active in the parish and sang in the choir for 50 years. Marge was an excellent cook, seamstress, and homemaker. She re-entered the workforce full time when she became a librarian at the Parklawn Health Library (Department of Health and Human Services). She worked there for 19 years, until she was 68. In retirement, she was an active volunteer for multiple organizations, including the Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection, the Washington Ear, and SOME (So Others Might Eat). She was an avid bridge player and attended line dancing classes until she was 90.
She is survived by four daughters: Maggi (Terry) Tumulty, Katie (Danny) McIe, Jenny Szawlewicz, and Jessica (Steve) Moore; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, her brother Louis D’Auria, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her devoted husband Stan in 2014 and her beloved daughter Annie (Ed) Durkin in 2018.
Visitation will begin at 10:30am on Saturday, July 17, 2021 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 4101 Norbeck Rd, Rockville, MD 20853, where the Mass of Christian burial will begin at 11:00am.
