Loring Hawkins Obituary

Loring Elwood Hawkins of Germantown, MD passed away on September 22nd, 2021 at the age of 80. Loring grew up on Long Island in Hempstead, NY, living in a neighborhood adjacent to the Hempstead Country Club.  At a young age, Loring’s father, Elwood, taught him to play golf at the course, where he eventually worked in his youth.  He rose to become the number one golfer for the Hempstead High School’s golf team.

Loring met his soulmate, Judy, at Hempstead High School when they were both 14 years old.  They married at the age of 18 years and soon after, Loring enlisted in the Army and served during the Korean War.  He was honorably discharged so that he could return home to help care for his mother and younger sister after his father unexpectedly died at the age of 50 from a myocardial infarction.

He started his golf career on Long Island as an assistant professional at the Heatherwood Country Club in Centereach, NY.  The family who owned the course built another in Middle Island, and seeing Loring’s promise, asked him to become the Head Golf Professional at Spring Lake Golf Club, where he served the club for 37 years.   He was a long-standing member of the Metropolitan section of the PGA.

Loring is survived by his loving spouse of 61 years, Judith Hawkins, his son, Scott Hawkins (wife Caroline) of Bayville, New York, and their 2 children, Lindsey and Paige, and daughter, Kathleen Hawkins (husband John Partridge) of Rockville, Maryland and their 2 children, Andrew and Megan.  He is also survived by his sister, Barbara.  He was preceded in death by his father, Elwood, mother, Susan, brother, Barry and sister, Linda.

Like his father, Loring battled heart disease for many years and the family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all of the many medical professionals who have cared for him over the years.  They would also like to give a very special thank you to the doctors and nurses at St. Francis Hospital on Long Island, as well as all those who cared for him during his final days at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

A Funeral Mass will take place at St. Raphael Catholic Church on Wednesday Oct 6th at 10:15am, located at 1513 Dunster Road, Rockville, MD 20854, phone 301-762-2143.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to PGA Hope in Loring’s Name.  This charity introduces golf to Veterans with disabilities to enhance their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being at no cost.  Anyone wishing to donate to Met PGA HOPE may do so either by:
