Kathleen Veronica Gaffney

Kathleen Veronica Gaffney, 93, of Silver Spring, MD, passed away on 23 February 2021. Devoted wife to pre-deceased, Peter Thomas Gaffney, and loving mother to Anne, Bernadette and Peter. She was born on 10 June 1927 in Dublin, Ireland to parents Anne Seery and Patrick Farrell.

Kathleen met her husband Peter in 1942. They were married on February 11, 1953 in Dublin, Ireland, together raising three children.

After secondary school Kathleen went to work at Bolger’s Department Store in Dublin. She excelled at design and eventually became the head window dresser.

Kathleen relocated with her husband and daughters to Arlington, VA in 1962. Her third child, Peter was born in Washington, DC the same year.  Eventually in 1967 her husband’s career moved the family to New Jersey.  There, Kathleen was able to reconnect with her love of color and design working for a wallpaper business.  She remained in New Jersey until moving with her husband to Silver Spring, MD in 2014 to be closer to their family.   

Kathleen loved spending time with her children, their families, sharing vacations, and life’s celebrations.

Kathleen is survived by her daughters, Anne Gaffney-Kasden and Bernadette Gaffney Kiel, son Peter Kiernan Gaffney, and grandchildren, Peter, Evelyn, Lucas, Joshua and Ryan. Her son in-laws, Lowell Kasden and Greg Kiel, and her daughter in-law Deirdre Gaffney played a significant role in her life.

The family would like to thank Holy Cross Hospice for the home care provided during our Mother’s last days.

The family has entrusted Cole Funeral Services with the arrangements for cremation. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, March 6, 2021 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 15661 Norbeck Blvd., Silver Spring, MD 20906 - 10:30 am Visitation, 11:00 am Mass.  Covid CDC guidelines will be in place.
