John G. Mergner

John G. Mergner, Sr., Born July 20, 1935, passed away peacefully with his children by his side in Frederick, MD on January 21, 2022 of natural causes.  Jon is survived by his five children, Colleen Mergner Ryan (Gerry), Jack Mergner (Chrissy), Kenneth Mergner (Annika), Susan Mergner Ribot (Stephane), and Thomas Mergner (Stacey); eleven grandchildren, Kelly, Michael, Megan, Melissa, Patrick, Debbie, Michelle, Scott, Tyler, Alex, and Oliver; five great-grandchildren, Saige, Bodie, Olivia, Charlie, and Thomas; and other extended family.  He was preceded in death by his parents Frederick “Fred” C. Mergner and Agnes Vivian (Meinberg) Mergner, four siblings, Helena, Henry, Elizabeth, and Frederick “Fred” along with his former wife Mary Katherine “Kathy” Mergner.

A native Washingtonian, John graduated from Georgetown Preparatory School and Georgetown University with a degree in Economics.  He held positions in the real estate and securities industries throughout his career including as a stock broker for Mitchell & Company Investments, Dominick & Dominick Inc., and First Union Securities Inc.  He later served as President of Gasdrill Associates, Director of J.D. Riviere & Co., Inc, and Director of Bagel Master, Inc.  In addition to a prolific securities career, John served on the board of the Washington Board of Realtors and Security Traders of Washington, D.C.  Loved by colleagues, clients and partners, John ultimately retired from a long career in financial services in 2015 where he laid the foundation and leaves his legacy in The Mergner Group at Morgan Stanley.

Outside of the office, John was a loyal Washington sports fan and proud season ticket holder to the Washington Capitals for more than a decade.  Those who knew John in and around the community could find his free time devoted to coaching youth baseball, sharpening his golf game or at the beach with his family.  John was an avid gardener tending to his well-manicured yards in Bethesda and Ocean City, Maryland. He will be forever remembered and missed dearly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 31 at 11 a.m. at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, 6900 River Road, Bethesda, MD. Interment to immediately follow at Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with John's family 30 minutes before the Mass at St. Bartholomew's.
