Joaquim Nunes Abreu passed away peacefully at his home in Silver Spring, MD on March 7, 2020. He was surrounded by the love of his family during his final days. Joaquim was born on October 30,1938 in Buarcos, Portugal. He joined the Portuguese Navy at a young age and in his 30’s emigrated to Washington, D.C. to work at the Attaché Defense Office of the Portuguese Embassy where he worked until retirement. Joaquim married the love of his life, Maria de Fatima Abreu in 1974. They were married for 25 years before Maria de Fatima lost her battle with cancer in 1999. Together they raised their three children, Leonard, Carla, and Nelson in Maryland. Joaquim was blessed with 6 loving grandchildren, Natalia, Ava, Henry, Alena, Leo and Liam and his Goddaughter Cristina’s two children, Luke and Juliana, who filled his heart with joy.
The family will receive friends for visitation at St. Peter’s Church, 2900 Olney Sandy Spring Road, Olney, MD 20832, on Friday, March 13 from 11:00-11:45 am. The Mass of Christian burial will follow immediately at 12:00 pm. Following the Mass, Joaquim will be laid to rest by his wife at Saint Mary’s Cemetery, 1350 Baltimore Road, Rockville, MD 20851.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Peter’s School in Olney and Montgomery Hospice.
