Joan Mae Scott

May 30, 1941 ~ November 7, 2022 (age 81)

Obituary

Joan Mae Scott of Silver Spring, MD, previously a long time resident of Rockville, MD, passed away on Monday, November 7, 2022, at the age of 81. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 42 years, David Gow Scott (2005). She is survived by her son Paul (Renee) Scott, grandchildren Sam and Claire; and her son Michael (Gloria) Scott, granddaughter Lourdes.

Joan was born on May 30, 1941 in Adams, MA to Stanley Starsiak and Stacia Starsiak (Dziadzio).  After graduating high school, she moved to Washington DC and worked at the US Naval Reactors Office as a secretary for Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, considered the “Father of the US Nuclear Navy.”  It was at Naval Reactors that she met David, the love of her life. They wed on August 24, 1963, and after a few short years living in Idaho Falls, ID, they moved back to the DC area and settled in Rockville, where she became a homemaker and mother to Paul and Michael.

Joan and David were avid rose gardeners, maintaining and caring for a garden of over 140 rose plants in their backyard.  They loved to spread the bounty of their harvest so to speak, sharing beautiful stunning rose bouquets with family, friends, doctors offices, and the church.  Paul and Michael never had to buy flowers for their dates, ever.

Joan was a devoted wife, mother, neighbor, and friend.  She was kind to whoever she met, and while she would describe herself as shy and introverted, within five minutes  of sitting next to someone, she would be able to tell you their entire life story.

Her most cherished role in her later life was that of grandmother to Sam, Claire, and Lourdes. She was kind and extraordinarily patient, and spent countless hours attending activities and performances, reading, watching movies, and playing school and beauty salon, acting always the part of student or customer. She was proud of all their accomplishments and was always ready with an over-the-top reward for a job well-done. She is missed beyond words.
