Jean Eleanor Roxon, of Silver Spring, Maryland, went home to the Lord on August 13, 2025, at the age of 103. She was born on February 6, 1922, in the Finnish settlement of Painesville, Ohio, where she grew up with her two younger sisters. She attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree. As World War II loomed, she became a civilian nurse at Fletcher General Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, where she met her future husband, MedTech 3 Daniel Roxon. They were married in 1945. Upon Daniel’s discharge from the Army, they moved to Washington, D.C., eventually settling in Wheaton, Maryland, where they raised their three children. When the children grew older, she returned to the work force as a research laboratory mycologist.
In retirement, Jean and Daniel moved to Leisure World, where Jean became an avid gardener (at one time maintaining four large garden plots), and she especially enjoyed crafting with the St. Andrew’s Craft Ministry. In those years, Jean and Daniel split their time between Silver Spring, Maryland, and Sanibel Island, Florida. Sadly, she was predeceased by her beloved Daniel after forty-five years of marriage, and later by her cherished dogs, Spot and Pooh Bear.
Jean is survived by her three children: Dana F. Roxon (Laura), Margaret E. Hadley (Don), and John E. Roxon (MaryJo); two grandchildren, Dr. Caroline A. Roxon (Hunter) and Dr. Christopher D. Roxon (Katie); two great-grandchildren: Harper Roxon and Elijah Roxon; six step-grandchildren and eight step great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held on October 23, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at The Lutheran Church of St. Andrew. Jean’s remains will be interred in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery with those of her late husband. Donations in her memory may be made to The Lutheran Church of St. Andrew, Silver Spring, Maryland (https://www.mystandrew.org/give/) or to an animal charity of your choice.
