Jane Young Obituary

Dorothy Jane (Weeks) Young passed away peacefully at home on June 16, 2025, on her 73rd wedding anniversary. She was born on February 8, 1928, in Hampton, Iowa and graduated from Hampton High School. She attended St. Catherine University in Minnesota before transferring to and graduating from Iowa State University. There she majored in Home Economics Education and pledged the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She first worked as a teacher in Guthrie Center, Iowa.

Jane met her husband Jack Young through her brother Bill Weeks in high school. Jack moved from Hampton to California, but they reconnected through letters and met up in Times Square while Jack was stationed nearby for a summer assignment from the Naval Academy and Jane was visiting New York. They married after Jack graduated in 1952 and moved to San Diego, California.

Jane was deeply committed to her family. She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Jack, and her children Chad (Mary), Lizz (Steve), John, Catherine (Dave). She was preceded in death by her stillborn son, John Charles Jr. She was beloved as Mimi to her ten grandchildren, Claire (Scott), Margaret (Austin), Theresa (Will), Alexandra (Jeff), Connor, Ryan, Emily, Olivia, Charlie and Lizzie, as well as six great-grandchildren.

After several moves during Jack’s Navy submarine career, Jane and Jack relocated to Bethesda, Maryland when Jack worked for the Atomic Energy Commission. As the family grew, they became one of the first families to move to Montgomery Village, Maryland, then to Potomac, and back to Montgomery Village. They moved to Victory Terrace in 2021.

Jane was a sought-after substitute teacher, preschool teacher, and later, with her daughter Lizz, became a successful realtor with Prudential in Potomac. Wherever she lived Jane always found ways to volunteer through her parishes and organizations such as Meals on Wheels and Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA,) and she was also an emeritus member of the Little Farms Garden Club.
