James Tobias Obituary

James Alvin Tobias passed away peacefully at his home in Rockville, Maryland on October 17, 2020. James was born on July 11, 1967 in Denver, Colorado.

James always loved music and was a talented percussionist. He graduated from the Lamont School of Music, University of Denver in 1991. He later joined the U.S. Army Band and was stationed in Arizona, Germany, and South Korea, where he met his beloved wife, Sunhee. After 8 years of active duty, he returned to the University of Denver and earned a master’s degree in Library and Information Science in 2005. He worked as a librarian for the U.S. Army Center of Military History for 14 years and also served in the Colorado, Virginia, and DC National Guard Bands for many years.

James loved classical music, the cello, books, art, traveling, and baseball. He was a man of deep Christian faith, who loved reading the Bible and was active in his church. James will be remembered as a loving, kind, and caring husband, son, brother, friend, and colleague, and also as a military serviceman who demonstrated gentle and kind leadership.

James is survived by his wife, Sunhee Park; mother Gunvor Tobias; sisters Linnea Tobias and Lisa Scott; brother David Tobias; brother-in-law Zant Scott; nieces Jennifer Focke and Arianna Scott; and nephews Jeremiah Ramirez and Caleb Krogman. He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Tobias.

James’ funeral and interment will be held privately on Saturday, November 7.
