Hossein Rahjoo Obituary

Dr. Hossein Rahjoo, a deeply respected physician, devoted humanitarian, and beloved family man, passed away peacefully in Maryland on March 31, 2025. Born in Tehran, Iran in 1937, Dr. Rahjoo lived a life of profound purpose, marked by service and compassion.

Graduated from Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 1964 and later trained as a general surgeon, he served with courage and dedication as a Red Cross doctor during the Vietnam War, and years later in the Iran-Iraq war. In the most challenging of circumstances, he offered healing and hope to the wounded—his humanitarian spirit guiding him through war and peace alike.

Moved by the suffering of burn patients and the lack of specialized care in northern Iran, Dr. Rahjoo founded Zareh Hospital, a pioneering facility created to bring relief and healing to burn victims and their families. Despite numerous challenges and roadblocks, through Zareh, he brought hope and dignity to many who had nowhere else to turn.

Outside the operating room, Dr. Rahjoo was a man of simple joys. He was an avid gardener, loved traveling and roadtrips, and was blessed with a beautiful singing voice. Above all, he cherished his family and his calling. He saved lives not just with his hands, but with his heart—and in doing so, created a legacy of kindness and resilience.

Dr. Rahjoo was the loving husband of Shahin Nouraei, and the proud father of Leyla Rahjou-Esfandiary (Siamak Esfandiary), Shiva Barimani (Ali Barimani), and Ali Rahjoo (Saba Aghapour). He was also a dear grandfather to Monelli, Ava, Ashkan, and Kian, each of whom carries his loving memories in their hearts.

His legacy is woven into the lives he saved, the institution he built, and the family he adored. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, his unwavering generosity, and his deep commitment to serving others.
