On the morning of January 19, 2022, George Wesley Gould, Jr. ("Buddy") died at the age of 87 after a brief illness.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Nina Gene, daughters Christina Gould of Midland, TX, Sherri Tarpley of Laurel, MD, and Suzanne Gould of Arlington, VA, grandchildren Lauren Van Brunt, Laura Layton, and Timothy Tarpley, and 13 nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his daughter Theresa Gould, and siblings Carol Welch, Margaret Mary Frillman, Ronald Gould, and Michael Gould.
Born in Georgetown, Washington, DC on January 11, 1935, he was the son of the late George Wesley Gould, Sr. and Margaret (Lyons) Gould. He was raised in Northeast DC.
He attended Gonzaga College High School, where he played on the basketball team. He graduated from McKinley Technology High School in 1953. After high school, he attended the District of Columbia Teacher's College and graduated from the University of Houston in Texas.
After graduation, George began a career with the federal government that spanned 40 years, first working at the US Department of Agriculture before transferring, in the 1960's, to the US Department of Commerce, where he worked as a budget analyst.
A lifetime Houston Oilers and Washington Senators fan, George rarely missed an important game broadcasted by radio or television, whether the game was basketball, baseball, or football. It was not unusual to find him with one ear wired up to a small transistor radio in his shirt pocket, wherever he went.
Devoted to his wife, children, and extended family, George could be counted on to lend an ear (or a dollar) to anyone needing one, often spending hours in conversation, in person or on the phone, with family members near and far who would seek him out for help and counsel. A man of vast knowledge, he was a pillar of strength to all who were lucky enough to know him.
In lieu of flowers or donations, give a big hug to your nearest and dearest or call an extended family member and ask how they are doing. George would have liked that.
Funeral Service and interment will be held on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at 11:30am at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, MD.
