George Chahalis Obituary

George Nikita Chahalis, fell asleep in the Lord surrounded with love on January 10, 2022. He is the beloved husband of Georgia (Kalamaras) Chahalis. Adored father of Nicholas (Dina Moisakos) Chahalis and Peter Chahalis. Adored grandfather of Georgia (Gabriel) Uruburo, George Chahalis and Patricia Chahalis (fiancé of Shane Mynes).  Adored great-grandfather to Adriana, Antonio, Alexia, Julia and Natalie. He also had 6 additional grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Beloved son of Nikita and Politimi (Sakkas) Tsahalis. Cherished brother of Panayiotis, Stratis, Petros Tsahalis, and Maria (Tsahalis) Sgoupakos, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by Theodoros, Spiros, Demetrios, Kosta Tsahalis, Eleni (Tsahalis) Pappas, Froso (Tsahalis) Mavrodis, and Froso Tsahalis.

He was born on August 15, 1932 in Anavreti Sparta, Greece. He was the first of his family to come to the United States, leaving a widowed mother, seven brothers and four sisters behind to build a life to help his family back home. He was sponsored by his uncle Thomas Tsahalis in 1950 and he immigrated to Perth Amboy, New Jersey. George worked hard to send money home by working in his uncle's restaurant and taught himself English in order to become a naturalized citizen of the United States. After working hard, he was able to first sponsor his brother Panayioti and then their sister Eleni. Together they worked hard to build a better future for their family, while sponsoring the rest of the brother’s and sister’s to immigrate between Canada and the United States.

He was an active member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in New Jersey with the goal of implementing Greek traditions, language and faith. His commitment included the membership of the Parish Council, the AHEPA society and NY Greek Society Vryseon Avanvrytis. His future wife, Georgia Kalamaras, immigrated to the United States in 1953 and reunited as they were childhood friends. On January 9, 1955 George and Georgia embraced the holy sacrament of marriage and their love for each other throughout 67 years. Their life together blossomed with opening their own family restaurants that later involved the help of their two son’s Nicholas and Peter.

Throughout the years of their marriage they moved from New Jersey, to Maryland, to Canada and then finally settled back in Maryland. Together with their son Nicholas and daughter in law, Dina, they built their forever home in Silver Spring, Maryland and making memories with their grand-children and great-grand-children. He actively participated as a member of St. Constantine and Helen’s Church of Washington DC by working with family and friends to continue his previous goals within the church community. In his early retirement years, he enjoyed traveling and also helped to raise his grand-children Georgia, George and Patricia. He was fortunate to become a great-grandfather to 18 great-grand-children. He was the life of the party and a great husband, father, brother, grandparent and friend to all. He will be missed.
