Gabriel Kavadias Obituary

Gabriel Gregory Kavadias, of Olney, Maryland, passed away on Sunday, December 27, 2020.  Loving husband of Koula Kavadias; beloved father of Theodora Kavadias, Demetre Kavadias (Erica), and the late Gregory Kavadias; grandfather of Marina Dionisopoulos (Kosta) and Alexandra Aiken; Diana, Olivia and Gabriel Kavadias; and Gabriel and Vasili Kavadias; great-grandfather of Vasili Dionisopoulos; brother of Vasilios Kavadias, Ntinos Kavadias, Maria Tsouganatou, and the late Dionisios Kavadias; also survived by many loving family members in the United States, Greece and Australia.

Gabriel immigrated to the United States in 1954 along with his brother Vasilios, shortly after an earthquake devastated their home island of Kefalonia, Greece.  He worked many jobs to help support the family on the island.  He married in 1964 and began building a family.  He eventually acquired the A&K Restaurant on Capitol Hill, which was later expanded and renamed Taverna The Greek Islands.  Other restaurants were started and sold over time, including Toscanini Restaurante.  After 40 years, Taverna was sold in 2006, and Gabriel focused his time to helping his son, Gregory, start up the Greek Spot in DC's U Street corridor. Gabriel loved his family, and took great pride in his culture and heritage, with a special love for his birthplace of Kefalonia.

The Funeral Liturgy will begin at 11am on Monday, January 4, 2021 at Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 701 Norwood Road, Silver Spring, Maryland 20905.  Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, Maryland.  If flowers are ordered through a florist other than the portal on this obituary page, they must be delivered directly to the church, Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, on the day of the funeral.  The funeral home will not accept floral deliveries.

Memorial contributions may be made to House of Kefalos, Inc (Kefalonian Society) in Rockville, Maryland; and to Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Silver Spring, Maryland (details below).
