Frederick D. Merkel

On Monday, November 7, 2023 Frederick D. Merkel passed away peacefully at the age of 90.  He is survived by his devoted wife Barbara, and his loving children Kenneth (Ann), Gregory (Lisa), and Christine (David); his cherished grandchildren Nicholas, Sarah, Caroline, Emily, Lesley, Laura, and Jakob; and by his great grandchildren Aubreigh and Ayden.  Fred was predeceased by his parents Frederick and Agnes Merkel and siblings George, Veronica, Thomas, Robert, and Jack.

Fred was born January 27, 1933 in New York City.  He was the fifth of six children in his family.  He graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School and attended New York City College.  He was drafted to the Army during the Korean War and served from 1953 – 1955.  He married Barbara Jakob on June 24, 1961 in St. Paul, MN.

Fred spent most of his career working as an engineer for IBM in New York City.  He enjoyed collecting and repairing pocket watches, playing the clarinet and saxophone, and riding his motorcycle.

The Funeral Mass will begin at 11am on Friday November 10, 2023 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Silver Spring, MD.
