Filippo A. Capobianco of Silver Spring, MD passed away peacefully on Monday, June 15, 2026, at the age of 95. Beloved husband of the late Lucia Capobianco; father of Maria Calandra (Michael) and the late Sandra Capobianco; grandfather of Justin, Rosina and Julia Calandra; brother of Concetta Monaco (the late Michele) and Savino Capobianco (the late Bettina); brother-in-law of Letizia Capobianco (widow of the late Domenico) and Teresa Di Franco. He is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Born on May 1, 1931, in the beautiful hill town of Roseto Valfortore, Italy, Filippo was raised with the strong values of faith, family, and hard work that defined his life. Limited family resources in the aftermath of World War II prevented him from pursuing his dream of furthering his education beyond the 5th grade to become a doctor of medicine. Instead, Filippo turned his focus to developing his God-given extraordinary musical talent, teaching himself to play many instruments and becoming a well-known virtuoso of the piano, organ, and most especially the flute.

In the late 1950's, he emigrated to the United States by way of Canada, eventually meeting and marrying the love of his life, Lucia, in Roseto, Pennsylvania. Together they settled in the Washington, DC area and built a life centered on love, resilience, and community. A proud Italian-American, Filippo embodied the immigrant spirit — working tirelessly, embracing his adopted country while never forgetting his roots. For many years, he and Lucia owned and operated Wheaton Valet and Hope Cleaners in Montgomery County, MD alongside his late in-laws, Michelina and Donato D’Avella. They created a successful business built on such strong relationships with their employees, customers, and vendors that they became like family.

Filippo also had a sharp sense of humor and a memorable and ever-present smile. He was warmly welcomed and well loved by friends and new acquaintances alike. A man of deep and abiding faith, he was a long-time parishioner at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Washington, DC, St. Mark’s in Hyattsville, MD, St. John the Evangelist in Forest Glen, MD, and more recently St. Patrick’s in Rockville, MD. He found strength in his faith, living his Catholic values every day. He took great joy in family gatherings, playing the organ that friends always made available for him to play, sharing stories and laughter of his Italian upbringing and early days in America, and offering hospitality, wisdom, steadiness, and warmth to all who knew him. As the patriarch of his family, he instilled pride in the Capobianco lineage and the importance of education, joyful perseverance, caring for one another, and staying rooted in faith and tradition.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Rockville, MD from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm. A second Visitation will be held at St. Patrick's on Friday, June 26, 2026, from 11:00 am until 12:00 noon, followed by the Funeral Mass at 12:00 noon. Interment will follow at 2:00 pm at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, Maryland.
