Esther Pastrana Gonzalez, age 86, was called home to God on Good Friday, April 3, 2026. She passed away peacefully in her home, in the presence of her family. Originally from La Habana, Cuba, Esther will be remembered for her warmth, joy, and the love she shared with her family, friends, and community.
Esther was born to Raúl and Úrsula Gonzalez in La Havana, Cuba, in 1940. She studied medicine in Cuba, survived the revolution, emigrated to Costa Rica, and then settled in the United States. She raised her children in Texas. She worked as an ophthalmic technician for many years in Texas and later in Miami, FL.
Esther was a devoted Catholic and grew deeper in her faith through the trials in her life. She strove to bring her children to Mass each Sunday, despite significant obstacles. She sang in her parish choir and taught religious education when her children were young. Later in life, she became a Eucharistic minister and developed a deep appreciation of Franciscan spirituality.
She is survived by her daughter, Darenys Radich and her son, Lurko Pastrana; by her son-in-law, Paul, her niece Alicia García, her godson Roberto Gonzalez; and by her six grandchildren—Benedict, Dominic, Sophia, Gabriel, Clement, and Vincent—who brought her much happiness in her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Raúl and Ursula Gonzalez; and her sister, Alicia Montes.
Esther loved music: playing her guitar and piano, writing songs, singing in a group or solo. She loved being the life of the party and brought enthusiasm and joy to many with her lovely voice, beautiful smile, songs (often about Cuba) and love of dancing. Her creativity also encompassed painting - often painting scenes from her beloved Cuba.
Although she had slowed down in recent years due to dementia, she still enjoyed listening to Cuban music each day.
Her life was a testament to love, honesty, and unrelenting determination and perseverance. She leaves behind a legacy of the Catholic faith she embraced and her deep love for her family.
The Viewing will take place on Friday, April 17th from 10:30-11:30 AM and the Funeral will be at 11:30 AM. Both will take place at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Rockville, MD (details below).
