Eduardo Torres passed away peacefully, after a years-long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, on Monday, March 9, 2026 at Olney Assisted Living by Artis in Maryland.
He is survived by his two daughters, Lizette and Stephanie; his three grandchildren, Lucas, Amarese, and Canelo; his older sisters, Noelia and Gloria; his sons-in-law, Steven and Carlos; and beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Eduardo was born in Humacao, Puerto Rico. From humble beginnings, he grew to live a life defined by service, courage and dedication to others. As a young man, he proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard and later in the United States Army. After his military service, Eduardo settled in New York City, where he continued his commitment to public service and community. He began working as a postal carrier for the United States Postal Service, serving neighborhoods and building connections with the people along his route. Soon after, he joined the New York Police Department (NYPD), where he built a distinguished 25-year career. Eduardo first served as a patrolman and later as a detective. During his time with the NYPD, he played an important role in dismantling large-scale burglary operations and in helping safely resolve dangerous hostage situations. In the 1970s, he was part of the pioneering hostage negotiation team whose groundbreaking work became a national model for crisis negotiation. After retiring from the NYPD, Eduardo continued his service to the country by working for the Central Intelligence Agency for another 20 years. Despite the seriousness of his work, Eduardo was known for his warmth, humor and generous spirit. He loved helping others and was deeply proud of his country and the life he had built through perseverance and dedication. Through hard work and determination, he established a career in public service, where he was respected for his reliability and willingness to help others. He believed strongly in providing for his family and creating opportunities for the generations that followed.
In his personal time, he enjoyed many simple but meaningful pleasures. He was a devoted fan of the New York Yankees and rarely missed the chance to watch or listen to a game. Music was always part of his life, whether it was Elvis Presley and classic oldies from the 1960’s or the vibrant rhythms of Willie Colón and other Latin artists. He took pride in his Puerto Rican heritage and loved sharing its traditions, music and food with those around him. Eduardo also loved traveling, fishing, cooking and most of all spending time with his family. He had a natural ability to make people laugh and bring joy to any gathering.
Eduardo Torres will be remembered for his bravery, kindness and deep love for family and country. He was a man who dedicated his life to protecting others and uplifting those around him. His legacy lives on through the family he cherished and the countless lives he touched. He will be profoundly missed but never forgotten.
Eduardo will be celebrated in a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org ; or to the New York City Police Athletic League (PAL) organization at palnyc.org, reflecting the values and generosity that defined his life.
