Dorothy Ann Mallery passed away peacefully on February 10, 2025 surrounded by her family. She was born in North Tarrytown, New York on October 25, 1926 to the late Andrew Joseph Kisela and Theresa Kisela. She had one brother, Andrew, who predeceased her.
Dorothy grew up in North Tarrytown, a beautiful village along the Hudson River now known as Sleepy Hollow. She attended North Tarrytown High School where she participated enthusiastically on the cheerleading squad. Dorothy would often entertain her family by reciting the cheers for good old NTHS up to the days shortly before her death at the age of 98. One of the star athletes at NTHS was Edwin R. Mallery, Jr. (“Eddie”), whom Dorothy would marry following his service in World War II. They had one daughter, Candace, and lived a married life of mutual devotion for 59 years.
They continued to live in North Tarrytown while Eddie pursued a career in sales with Hallmark Cards. In 1969, Dorothy and Eddie moved to Kansas City when Eddie was promoted to a position in Hallmark’s main office. Upon arriving in Kansas, Dorothy was sure she would be returning to her dear New York in short order. However, after taking up golf (Eddie’s lifelong passion) she settled into Midwest life for over 40 years. She and Eddie loved living in Leawood, KS and spent years traveling and always visiting and taking vacations with Candace and her husband, Brian, and their grandchildren.
After Eddie passed in 2005, Dorothy remained in Kansas enjoying her many friendships. Eventually she returned to the East coast to live with Candace and Brian in Silver Spring, Maryland. For more than a decade, Dorothy delighted in being with the families of her four grandchildren including her ten great grandchildren. She became a cherished fan at numerous ball games where she cheered on her great grandchildren with gusto. Dorothy especially loved celebrating holidays with family, always helping Candace with decorating and introducing the whole family to cherished traditions.
Dorothy was always a delight to be around. She enjoyed life and it was infectious. As a longtime friend remarked, she “was one of a kind and one of our all-time favorites. She will be missed so much.”
She is survived by her daughter, Candace Phelan, son-in-law, Brian Phelan, four grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at St. Andrew Apostle Catholic Church in Silver Spring, MD followed by a Funeral Mass a 10:30 am. Interment will follow at a later date.
