Dan Harper

October 26, 1936 ~ February 15, 2022 (age 85)

Obituary

On Tuesday, February 15, 2022, Dan Harper, beloved husband for 57 years of Beth Harper, died peacefully. He was the loving father of three sons, Matthew (Mandy), Andrew (Laura), and Justin (Nikki). He was blessed with four grandchildren, John, Conor, Harmony and Lily.

Dan was born in Marlinton, WV on October 26, 1936. After high school, Dan served in the US Army.

During the 1960s, Dan moved to Washington, DC where he spent over 40 years in service to the Dept. of the Navy. He was true to his West Virginia roots his entire life and he cherished his extended family in West Virginia.

After moving to Washington, DC, he met Mary Beth Heller and they began a relationship. They married soon after, a marriage that would last nearly 60 years. They welcomed sons Matthew in 1970, Andrew in 1974, and Justin in 1981. Dan was a basketball and baseball coach, Indian Guides leader, and mentor to his three sons. He was also active in his community and the Greater Olney Civic Association (GOCA).

In addition to his work life and community work, Dan was active in his parish. He served as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and on the pastoral council. He and Beth hosted Bible study in their home for more than 30 years. They were also active in Marriage Encounter and were a lead couple in Engaged Encounter for more than 40 years.

Dan was an avid golfer and loved to travel around the country and the world. He would often take “rambles” through the South where he would play golf and meet locals, take golfing trips with friends, or travel to explore new areas. He even once went to the Burning Man festival with his son Matt! Dan enjoyed telling stories and sharing his adventures with anyone who would listen.

Dan’s family asks that anyone who is so moved make donations to So Others Might Eat (SOME) in Washington, DC.

The entire Harper Family thanks you for your condolences, kind words, and abundant prayers during our time of mourning.
