Chris was the beloved husband of Amy Miller Gartland, devoted father to Claire (Bijan Madhani), Christopher and Peter Gartland, and the proud grandfather of Kieran Gartland Madhani.

A passionate hiker, Chris scrambled over the Billy Goat A trail more than 50 times with family, friends, or solitary. He was a frequent visitor to Meadowside Nature Center with Coco, his beloved dog and companion, leading the way and to Shenandoah National Park, spending many hours traversing his favorite trails, such as Old Rag, White Oak Canyon, Cedar Run, and Hawksbill Mountain Loop. Chris often organized vacations around major hikes, such as Half Dome (Yosemite NP), Grinnell Glacier trail (Glacier NP), Angels Landing (Zion NP), and Torres del Paine Base trail (Patagonia, Chile) as well as attending games at all Major League Baseball parks with his family. He found joy in coaching youth sports teams, volunteering for Caring Matters, and coordinating the Christmas Holiday Giving Program at St. Patrick Church, Rockville.
