Catherine Stewart Obituary

On October 27, 2023 Catherine D. "Cass" Stewart passed away at the age of 91 while in peaceful rest at her home at Bartholomew House in Bethesda Maryland.

Catherine was born on September 2nd 1932 to William and Gertrude Doherty in Cincinnati Ohio. In her youth Catherine's large and close knit family settled in Bethesda and she attended Immaculata School for Girls in Washington, DC. Catherine married John F. "Jack" Stewart at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Bethesda on June 13th 1953. They remained married for 58 years and went on to raise eight children. Catherine and Jack adored each other.

Catherine enjoyed poetry, literature, folk art, flower arranging, walking, lifelong learning, "spinning a yarn," the Broadway Theater in New York, and the warm summer sun. She was a faithful shuttle driver between Little League games, swim meets, equestrian and other 4-H functions, school events, and countless other activities for her children. Catherine was a wonderful cook and found pleasure in preparing her family meals every day. She gave her time generously to people in need, particularly those who experienced poverty or sufferers of AIDS. Catherine tirelessly gave tender and loving care to Jack in the final years of his life as he went through the afflictions of Alzheimer’s disease.

Catherine was preceded in death by her parents,  5 brothers, 2 sisters, and her husband Jack Stewart. She leaves behind her sister Margaret "Peggy" Rieger and her husband Earl of Rockville Maryland, all of her children; Mary M. Kotson and her husband John of Helena Montana, Julie S. Logan and her husband Jim of Harrisonburg Virginia, John D. Stewart and his wife Sherry of Reston Virginia, Joseph P. Stewart of Elkton Florida, Martin F. Stewart and his wife Lynda of Springfield Virginia, Stephen G. Stewart and his wife Valeria of Arlington Virginia, William C. Stewart and his wife Lynnsey of Boise Idaho, and Thomas A. Stewart of Sterling Virginia, and 14 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.

A private gathering for remembrance will be held at some future date.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests making a memorial gift to the Alzheimer’s Association. https://act.alz.org/site/Donation2?df_id=51079&51079.donation=form1&mfc_pref=T&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=paidsearch&utm_campaign=giving_bing
