Carl Thomas Felton, 98, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2024, at the VA Hospital in Martinsburg, WV. Born on February 6, 1926, to Maybelle and Carl Rudolph Felton, Carl was the second of five children and spent his formative years in Somerville, Massachusetts. He began his working life early, taking on a job as a newspaper delivery boy at the age of 6 during the Great Depression. Carl and his family cherished the summers spent at the Felton family farm in New Hampshire.
Carl attended Arlington High School and graduated in 1943. That same year, at just 17 years old, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II, including participation in the D-Day landings at Omaha Beach, Normandy, France. After the war, Carl utilized the GI Bill to attend and graduate from Suffolk Law School in 1952.
In 1954, Carl met the love of his life, Rita Catherine Pino, in Washington, D.C. The two were married on September 26, 1954, and together they raised two children, Stephen Anthony Felton and John Joseph "Jack" Felton. Carl was a devoted husband and father, always putting his family first. He enjoyed coaching in his spare time and was into anything and everything his boys liked to do.
Carl worked as a claims manager at Travelers Insurance Company for 21 years before joining the Department of Labor, where he spent another 21 years advocating for coal miners suffering from black lung disease.
Carl was predeceased by his beautiful and devoted wife Rita Catherine Pino Felton suddenly in 1997 and never remarried.
He was also predeceased by his parents, Maybelle and Carl Rudolph Felton, as well as his siblings: Francis Felton (Mary), Mary Baruffaldi (Buddy), Sister Joan Felton, and Walter Felton; by his nephew John Baruffaldi, niece Joan Baruffaldi, parents-in-law Catherine and Joseph Pino, brother-in-law Joseph Pino, and sisters-in-law Florence Keyser (Bill) and Josephine Pechnik (Bill).
Carl's memory will be cherished by his surviving family: his children, Stephen Anthony Felton and John Joseph "Jack" Felton (Jackie Monello Felton); his beloved grandchildren, Olivia Rita and Joseph Anthony "Joey" Felton; sister-in-law, Grace Pino; many nieces and nephews as well as the Monello extended family who loved and enjoyed Carl tremendously.
A service to celebrate Carl's life will be held on Monday, August 19, 2024, at St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 9201 Green Valley Road, Libertytown, MD 21791. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM.
