CAPT Robert Glenn Nicol SC, USN, (Ret)

January 24, 1928 ~ August 22, 2017 (age 89) 89 Years Old

On Tuesday, August 22, 2017 CAPT Robert Nicol, of Rockville, Md, beloved father of CDR Robert G. Nicol, Jr and his friend Sandra Kay McCannell; Major Carlton B. Nicol; Cynthia Nicol Everett and her husband John Charles Everett and Kathleen Nicol Turley and her husband Thomas Richard Turley Jr. and the late CDR William J. Nicol and his wife Amy Cole Nicol, passed peacefully. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and preceded in death by a grandson.

Born into a military family in 1928 in Long Beach CA, CAPT Bob, as he was known to many, enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the end of WWII at the age of 17. He earned his commission after graduating from University of California Berkley in 1949. CAPT Nicol devoted 30 years of distinguished service to his country, becoming a decorated Naval Officer with a deep devotion to the Naval Service as well as his family. His service included tours of duty onboard the USS Skagit AKA-105, the USS Coontz DLG-9, and VR-5. He served as the Executive officer Supply Center Mare Island Naval Shipyard and Charleston Supply Center. He attended the Naval War College in Newport, RI and did two tours in Washington DC including the Strategic Systems Program Office. After his retirement, he continued to support the Navy as a defense contractor for another 18 years.

He was married to the former Joan J. Curley for a blessed 65 years until her passing last year. He had remained the patriarch of the growing Nicol family for all those many years.

Visitation will be held at St. Patrick’s Church 4101 Norbeck Rd. Rockville MD 20853 on Monday August 28, 2017 from 1000 am to 1100 am followed immediately by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1100 am. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to St. Patrick’s School, www.stpatricksrockville.com or Montgomery Hospice-Casey House www.montogmeryhospice.org
