Betty Craig Obituary

Betty Jane Gallahan Craig, age 99, of Washington DC, passed away on Tuesday May 21, 2024, surrounded by family members. Born at Garfield Hospital, Betty Jane was the younger daughter of Jennie Bruce and Samuel L. Gallahan. She grew up in the Columbia Heights section of Washington DC and was one of the last living members of her Shepherd Street friends. She graduated from The Academy of the Holy Cross, then attended George Washington University.  She worked in administration at the NIH and at the Atomic Energy Commission.  

In 1953, Betty Jane married John L. Craig, a childhood friend who had become the love of her life. They enjoyed married life with their growing family. Betty Jane was a devoted wife to Jack and a loving, supportive mother to their 5 children. Jack and Betty were able to travel and enjoy life with grandchildren prior to Jack’s passing in 1988. As a widow, she continued to travel frequently with family and friends and was always up for new adventures. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames.

Betty Jane was predeceased by her husband Jack, her son Bruce (Michael), and great grandson Teddy Wiebke. She is survived by her daughters Jennie Wiebke (Eric), Liz Perry, and Trisha McKenna (Brian) and her son Neal (Dorothy). She was a wonderful Nana to Dan Wiebke (Aida), Emily Hansell (Heath), Ellen Jenkins (Logan), Isabel Wiebke, Brian Perry (Melissa), Maureen Perry (Jimmy Gilinsky), Kathleen Perry (Lee Winslow), Caitie McKenna, Erin Ray (Jonathan), Patrick McKenna, Mary Colleen McKenna, Jack Craig (Brittany), Shannon Craig (Tommy Fitzgerald), and Kelly Cullinan (Joe). She also leaves behind fourteen great grandchildren Sienna and Henry Wiebke, Elizabeth, Margaret, and Catherine Hansell, James and Lucy Jenkins, Ava and Aiden Perry, Mabel, Alice, and Peggy Ray, Dylan Fitzgerald, and Charlie Craig.  

A Visitation will be held on Thursday May 30, 2024 at 10 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 5949 Western Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20015.

Our family wants to acknowledge and give thanks for the kind care our mother received from the staff at Knollwood Health Services Center.
