Barry Schrier Obituary

Barry Allan Schrier, 59, of Germantown, MD, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday morning, February 24.

He was predeceased by his parents, Lorraine (Rubin) Schrier and Morton R. Schrier.

Barry is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Patricia “Patsy” Schrier, and their two sons, Joshua and Jeremy Schrier. He is also survived by his brothers, Steven M. Schrier and Jamey T. Schrier; his sister, Ellen (Schrier) Kearon; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and his many loving nieces and nephews along with extended family and dear friends who will miss him deeply.

Barry had a natural gift for technology and loved to tinker. Curious, thoughtful, and endlessly resourceful, he worked for many years in medical technical support, where his dedication and problem-solving skills helped countless colleagues and clients. He took quiet pride in figuring things out and making things work.

Music was Barry’s true passion. He loved many genres — rock, blues, Motown, jazz, and bluegrass — but his heart belonged to the music of the Grateful Dead and any band that “jammed,” as he would say. He began playing drums as a young teenager and proudly received his first drum kit at his Bar Mitzvah from his parents, Morty and Lorraine. He continued playing into adulthood, always chasing the rhythm.

In his early 50s, Barry taught himself guitar and became remarkably skilled. He later expanded into banjo and mandolin — the mandolin a special gift from Jeremy — and found great joy in playing along with his favorite songs. He listened deeply and passionately, always seeking the feeling behind the music.

Barry will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him. Taken far too young, he leaves behind a lifetime of memories, music, laughter, and love.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life at a later date and welcomes all who knew Barry to come share good vibes, stories, music, and a meal in his honor.

“Spent my life seeking all that’s still unsung.”

— The Grateful Dead
