Barbara Joan Posniewski

Barbara Joan Posniewski, RN (Mendel), 89, of Rockville, Maryland died peacefully at her home on January 14th, 2022, with her husband Francis by her side.

Born August 17th, 1932, Barbara and her two younger siblings were raised in Cohoes, New York by their parents William Albert Mendel and Frances R. Dyrcz Mendel. After graduating from Cohoes High School and the Cohoes Conservatory of Music, she received her RN certification from St. Peter's Hospital School of Nursing in Albany, NY. She worked on the operating staff at Leonard Hospital.

Barbara was married to Francis S. Posniewski for 68 years. They lived in Rockville, Maryland, raising eight children, Michael William (Shellie) Posniewski of Longmont, Colorado, Robert Walter (Mary Sue) Posniewski of Bethesda, Maryland, Monica Mary (Garry) Abare of Altamonte Springs, Florida, James Gerard (Diane) Posniewski of Venice, Florida, Daniel Paul (Lisa) Posniewski of Mt. Airy, Maryland, Mary Kathryn (Philip) Trudeau of Eden, Maryland, Barbara Marie (Blair) Kramer of Woodsboro, Maryland and the late John Francis Posniewski. She was “Babcia” to her 18 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Barbara was preceded in death by her sister Monica Flatley and her brother Frank “Sonny” Mendel. She dearly loved Gerry Flatley, Pat Mendel, and her many nieces, nephews and extended family.

After raising her children, Barbara worked in the dentistry field for several years and was actively involved at the Shrine of St. Jude, as a member of the Sodality and the adult choir, and helped out for decades at numerous church events. As loyal members of the Air Streamers Club, they were able to visit every city on their bucket list and also cherished trips to Hawaii, Mexico, and her other favorite country - Poland. As loyal members of the Polish Club of Rockville for years, Barbara and Francis impressed many lucky to have watched them joyously dance the Polka. Barbara’s warm heart and legendary  hugs will be missed.

Relatives and friends may call at Shrine of St. Jude Catholic Church, 12701 Veirs Mill Road, Rockville, Maryland, on Thursday, January 20, beginning at 10am; where Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Georgetown Preparatory School.
