Anne Byrdy Obituary

Anne Brewster Byrdy of Olney, Maryland passed away peacefully, with her family by her side on Sunday October 4, 2020.

Anne was born in Weston, West Virginia on July 22, 1933.  The daughter of the Eugene Hoffman Edwards and the Sarah Brewster Edwards, of Weston, West Virginia, she spent her formable years in Latrobe, Pennsylvania where her father was head football coach at St. Vincent’s College.  It was there she developed her appreciation for all things sports related. The family returned to West Virginia where she graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1952.

While visiting a friend in Washington, D.C., Anne met her husband of nearly fifty years, Edward Louis Byrdy.  She had stopped in the Meridian Hotel Pharmacy for aspirin and noticed the television was tuned to a baseball game. Ever the sports aficionado, Anne was immediately smitten with the pharmacist on duty, not realizing he knew little of sports, and the TV had been brought in by his young assistant.  They were married six months later and remained in the Washington Metropolitan area where they raised their three sons.

During these early years of marriage, Anne became an active member of Ascension Episcopal Church in Takoma Park, Maryland, where lifelong friendships formed.

With her children grown, she began the next chapter of her life, working at the University of Maryland.  It was there where she merged her enthusiasm of sports with her career, working in the Athletic Department, from 1980 until her retirement.  Her enthusiasm for the Terrapins was only rivaled by her devotion to friends and her passion for hospitality.  Ever the hostess, she will be remembered for elegant dinner parties, epic tailgates and an open door at Happy Hour.

Anne is proceeded in death by her husband Edward Louis Byrdy Sr., and her son Kitson Brewster Byrdy.  She survived by two sons, Edward Louis Byrdy Jr., and wife, Crystie of Olney, MD; Christopher Bryan Byrdy and wife, Mary Beth of Haymarket, VA.  Cherished grandmother of Edward III, Michael, Matthew, Andrew, Kaitlyn and Charlotte.  Loving sister of Gene Edwards Jr of Weston, WVa, and beloved aunt of Gene Edwards III (Lynn) of Norfolk, VA; Jill Brewster Stanton (Ty) of Hanover, MD, and their children Thomas, Jacob and Tyleen.
