Ami Kim Obituary

Ami Kim, formerly of Monmouth Junction, NJ, and Olney, MD, passed away on September 5, 2025. She was born on April 10, 1944, in Korea to Cho Pil Dae and Kim Okran. An accomplished pianist and graduate of Korea’s prestigious Seoul National University, she immigrated to the United States in 1971 to begin a new chapter of her life with her soon-to-be husband, Myong Chul Kim.

Ami was a beloved piano teacher in both Maryland and New Jersey, teaching countless neighborhood children how to play piano and read music. She also taught kindergarten at The Korean School of Washington and was an active member of her churches, where she generously volunteered her time and shared her gift of music in worship. Ami was a woman of many talents—self-taught in extraordinary cake decorating and flower arranging, as well as being a strong swimmer and even an early computer programmer! Perhaps her greatest achievement was the endless research she conducted into the best diets and nutrition for diabetes management when her husband Myong was diagnosed with the condition.

Ami is survived by her husband of 54 years, Myong Chul; daughter, Laura; son, Shane and daughter-in-law, Suzy; her grandchildren, Phoebe and Ollie; siblings Rochi, Roa and Aran; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers Jai Won and Jae Woong.

Ami will be remembered for her incredible strength and courage in succeeding in a country where English was her second language, her deep faith in God, and her unwavering love and generosity toward her friends and family.

A memorial service will be held on September 27 at 11 a.m. at the Korean Baptist Church of Washington, 310 Randolph Road, Silver Spring, MD 20904.
