Sidney Rhyne Obituary

Sidney, better known as White, was born April 2, 1931 in Charlotte North Carolina. He grew up in Philadelphia and has been a resident of the Washington DC. Metropolitan area since 1957.

Married since 1959 to his beloved wife Rosemarie Rhyne who passed December 26, 2017.  Son of the late Sidney White Rhyne Sr. and Ruth Naomi Dry Rhyne and brother Charles Rhyne. White is survived by his three children: Patty Rhyne-Kirsch, husband Peter; Kendall Sidney Rhyne; Randall Sylvanus Rhyne; and by his five grandchildren Kyle Anthony Kirsch, Mitchell Rhyne Kirsch, Taylor Kennedy Rhyne, Kendall Sidney Rhyne Jr. and Sydney Therese Kirsch.

White received his BA degree with honors in 1952 from Roanoke College. Admitted to Blue Key Honor Society and Phi Society. Served on Honor Council and as Editor-in-Chief of the Brackety Ack student newspaper. He also ran track.

White then attended University of Pennsylvania Law School from 1952-1955 and received a full tuition scholarship. He was also Editor of the University of Penn. Law Review.

From 1955-1957 White was an instructor at the US Army Signal School, Fort Monmouth, NJ. (This is when he met his wife)

In 1960 he received from Georgetown University Law Center an E. Barrett Prettyman Fellowship in Trial Advocacy, which provided full tuition and stipend for living expenses.

White practiced Law in Washington D.C., 1957-2005. He was a member and managing attorney for 25 years of the law firm Mullin, Rhyne, Emmons & Topel. He was a sole practitioner from 1997-2005.

*He was the principal author of briefs in seven cases before the United States Supreme Court.

*Chair in 1963-1966 of the DC Associate Committee of the A.B.A.

*Adjunct Professor 1964-1970 at the Georgetown Law Center.

*1978-1979 Chair of the Committee on Admissions and Grievances of the Unites States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

*1994-1995 President of the Federal Communications Bar Association. (FCBA)

*Served multiple terms on the Board of Directors of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia, (BADC) from 1967-2002

*1972-2001 Served multiple terms in the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association.

*Former member of the board of Trustees and Executive Committee, Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia.

*Two term President of the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia .

*One of the original Co-Founders and former Chair of the board of Trustees, Capitol Hill Day School.

Professional Awards & Recognition:

*Recipient in 1992 of the “Distinguished Service Award” of the Federal Communications Bar Association.

*Recipient in 2000 and 2001 of the “Presidential Award” from the Bar Association of the District of Columbia.

*Recipient in 2008 of one of the two “Servant of Justice” Awards by the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia.

*Listed 2002-2009 in Marquis Who’s Who in American Law, Who Who’s in America and Who Who’s in the World.

Dad was smart, kind, gentle, caring, loving husband, father, grandfather and good friend to so many.  We love and miss him dearly.

Services for White and his late wife Rosemary Rhyne will be held at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 9100 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, MD on Friday, March 16 with a visitaiton in the Fireside Room from 10:00 am until 10:45 am and a memorial service at 11:00 am in the church, followed by a reception in the Great Hall.
