Melvin Stone Obituary

Melvin Leroy Stone passed from this life on Thursday, October 31, 2019 at the age of 92.  Born on September 9, 1927 in Gloversville, New York, he was the son of Melvin Stone, Sr. and Elizabeth Lyke Stone Ebeling.  Melvin grew up in the Johnstown, NY area, and attended Canajoharie High School and Bryant College in Smithfield, Rhode Island. He served in the Army Air Corps.

Mel worked for Westinghouse and General Electric as an accountant and for the Treasury Department as a bank examiner. During the course of his career, Mel and his family lived in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland. 

Mel was an avid sports fan and train collector.  He loved the New York Giants and the Washington Nationals.  Mel enjoyed golfing and was a member of Argyle Country Club in Silver Spring.

Melvin is predeceased by his granddaughter, Julia Michelle Stone of Great Falls, Montana and grandson Troy Coats, also of Great Falls , Montana. In addition, he is predeceased by daughter-in-law Jennifer Stone of Olney, Maryland.  

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Janet Walker Stone, and 7 children:  Michael Stone of Olney; Greg Stone of Indianhead, Maryland; Alan Stone of Germantown; Jim Stone & wife Rose of Great Falls, Montana; Eric Stone & wife Anne Marie of Olney; Tora Stone of West Palm Beach, Florida; and Jeff Stone & wife Amy of Jefferson, Maryland.  

He is survived by 16 grandchildren: Jonathan Stone & wife Missy, Pierson Stone, Aaron Stone, Tricia Stone, Randy Stone, James Coats, Chris Jones & wife Jeanine, Megan Stone Bailly & husband Josh, Nicholas Gerhardt, Eric Stone & wife Alli, Stephen Stone, Ryan Gray, Walker Stone, Collin Stone & wife Brooke, Adam Stone and Bradley Stone.  He is survived by an additional 10 great grandchildren.   

Services were held privately on November 5 at Saint Peter’s Catholic Church in Olney.
