It is with great sadness that the family of Joan Cox Fincham of Gaithersburg, MD, announces her passing on November 23, 2019 at the age of 91. She was born in Takoma Park, MD on June 22, 1928. She died peacefully in her sleep at Holy Cross Hospital, Germantown, MD after a long period of failing health. Joan was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years Charles L. Fincham; her parents Albert Lawrence Cox and Margaret Joan Cox; brothers Robert and Lawrence Cox; sister Lorene Benedict; and her son, Mark L. Fincham. She is survived by her son, Richard L Fincham, 2 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
She was a devoted and beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend and persevered through devastating personal tragedies and severe physical suffering with tremendous courage and resolve. She loved her family, their reunions, and their history, celebrating her 90th birthday with many of them last year. She had a keen interest in reading, history, sports, arts and crafts, and genealogy. She was especially fond of sharing her remembrances regarding her upbringing and experiences from the 1930s and 40s on her grandparent’s farm in Newburg, MD.
During the course of her life she worked for the Veterans Administration and also worked in retail at Jelleff’s and Raleigh’s department stores in Silver Spring, MD.
Visitation with the family begins at 12 noon on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church - The Chapel of Our Lady, 520 Veirs Mill Road, Rockville, MD 20852, where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30pm. Internment will be held on Friday, December 20, 1:00pm, at George Washington Cemetery, 9500 Riggs Road, Adelphi, MD 20783.
