Potomac, MD – Dorothy "Jean" Hummon, 86, passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on September 9, 2017.  Jean was the daughter of the late Walter and Flora Tomion of Fowlerville, Michigan; beloved wife of 63 years to John Peter Hummon; loving mother of Jan Alison Hummon Westman (John), Marcus Spencer Hummon (Becca Stevens), Sarah Tomion Hummon Stevens (Brian), and Gretchen Mary Hummon (Peter Fry). She was also known as “Meno” to twelve adoring grandchildren (Matt, Carly, Luke, Levi, Caney, Moses, Tess, Anna, Griffin, Trevor, Phoebe, Malcolm), and was the dear sister of Jack Tomion and the late Ginny Hills and Spencer Tomion. 

Jean graduated from Albion College and led a life full of love and adventure with John and their kids. Because of John’s work with USAID, they lived inTanzania, Nigeria, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Botswana, Switzerland, and the D.C. area, ultimately settling in Potomac, Maryland.  Jean worked as an elementary school teacher in Ann Arbor, served as Community Liaison Officer for the U.S. Embassy in Botswana, and volunteered for twenty years at Miriam’s Kitchen in Washington D.C.; but her most cherished role was raising her four children. 

Jean was endlessly curious; she loved art,literature, sports, travel, and music, and passed on her eclectic interests to her children. With John she attended every sporting event, theatrical performance, and concert that she possibly could, usually decked out in "festive black.” Jean reveled in hearing from and being with her children and grandchildren. When the family gathered, she always made sure favorite foods were stocked for her houseguests. She joyously celebrated holidays, and was known for her beloved collage cards created from her vast collection of family photographs. She lit up the room when she greeted you. She will be missed by all.

A memorial service will be held Monday, September 18, 10:30 a.m., at Potomac Presbyterian Church (10301 River Road, Potomac, Maryland).  Please  honor Jean’s life by performing an act of kindness and, if able, by making a donation to Miriam’s Kitchen, an organization whose mission is to “end chronic homelessness in Washington, D.C.” (www.miriamskitchen.org)
