Frank Dominguez Obituary

Frank Dominguez died the morning of December 10 surrounded by family at his daughter’s home in Rockville, MD. Born October 4, 1931 in El Paso, Texas, he was the son of the late Jose A. Dominguez and Maria (Sanchez) Dominguez. The oldest of two sons, Frank graduated from Bowie High School (El Paso) in 1950. Frank enlisted in the Air Force where he would have qualified for pilot school if not for, as he discovered, a serious need for corrective eyewear. Since a strong prescription is not a prohibition for serving in cold weather, Frank was stationed in Adak, Alaska. While enduring the Alaskan winter he developed his love of reading and affinity for electronics. Once discharged from the Air Force, Frank used his G.I. Bill benefits to attend the Milwaukee School of Engineering where he graduated near the top of his class and earned an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science in Electronics Communication Technology in June, 1960. He returned to El Paso to accept a position at White Sands Missile Range where he began a 35 year career with Western Electric, Bell Labs, and Sandia Labs. His work in RADAR and microwave technology took Frank and his family to Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands, New Jersey, North Dakota, and Albuquerque. The last dozen years of his career Frank was a member of teams that focused on growing semiconductors and was named as co-inventor on five patents (Edison watch out!). He loved golf, cars, reading, politics, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Frank is survived by his brothers Jose A. Dominguez Jr.  and Leo Gutierrez and his wife Beatrice of El Paso; daughter Virginia Barry and her husband Kevin of Rockville, Maryland, son Frank Dominguez Jr., and his partner Martha Jauregui of Napa, California; grandchildren Jack, Erin, and Caroline Barry, Cole, Ava, and Lily Dominguez, and Frances Jo Jauregui Dominguez.
