While going through old CUSO files today I saw Lani’s address and was able to trace her obituary on google . So many memories have come back I thought I would share them with you and the family.

My husband and I went to Ghana the same time as her . I was teaching the commercial subjects in Tamale, Ghana College, my husband geography and history. So from day one we were friends.

We always stayed with her in Accra. We never met you as you were in Tripoli on our last visit. She told me about this American she really liked. But… the American government had visited her neighbors and family in Regina to find out if she was ok. That certainly puzzled us.

On one of my last visits I had flown to Accra on my own to send a telegram to Canada . The next day Lani went shopping but I stayed in the house to fix supper.

While sleeping on her couch a voice told me that my husband had been in an accident. I was to get my things together . The CUSO rep would take me to the bus stop and I would take the bus to Kumasi. He was alright but our motorcycle was damaged .

When Lani came home I told her all this . She accepted what I said and helped me get ready .
About an hour later it happened exactly that way.

I told this story in our church.

I wish we had stayed in touch. She was such a good friend. I will always remember her and her smile. Our condolences to you and your family.

I am deeply saddened upon learning about Leilani's passing. I knew her briefly when we worked at INS, Manila in 1978. She and David attended my wedding in April 1978. When they left Manila, I have not heard from/about Leilani. I recently started making attempts to reconnect with people who have made good impressions and friends in the past who I kept in my heart but whose contact info regrettably were kept in between the pages of my directory that was buried with piles of stuff called work.

Leilani, Forty one years may have passed but I still remember your smile. I vividly remember that one day when you helped me process orphan petitions and we addressed the petitioner who was in his military uniform Sgt. and we later realized he was a Colonel. We laughed a lot that day. Wish I could tell you I came to US in 1988 on the basis of my US govt service. And we don't live very far from each other; my husband and I now live in PA. Anyhow, I am glad I found you. Goodbye. Rest in peace.

Those incredible words about Lani were an extreme understatement. She was an absolutely incredible woman. We met her in Manila in 1975. She was very easy to make friends her. Her and David's magnetism drew people all around them. Manila was our first post, and getting used to Foreign Service life was a bit of a challenge. Lani helped us through it and David and Lani were among our dearest friends. We were profoundly sorry to hear of her passing. She made a great difference in this world.

I am so sorry to hear of Leilani's passing. I remember great times I had with her, Timlen and their mom. They were the best of next door neighbors. I only got to meet her husband at their wedding those many years ago in Regina.
